Before a group hike: the fifteen minutes that matter

What to agree on in the car park, and what to do if someone does not arrive.

Most mountain incidents are not dramatic. Someone turns an ankle, someone takes the wrong branch of a path, someone runs out of daylight. What decides how it ends is usually what the group agreed before setting off.

Agree these out loud

Know each other’s basics

Ask the question that feels awkward: does anyone have a condition or medication the rest of us should know about? People often do not mention asthma, a nut allergy or a heart condition because they do not want to make a fuss.

This is exactly what a group in Petra is for: everyone fills in their own card once, the group agrees what it shares, and nobody has to interview anybody in a car park.

If someone does not arrive

If the group was sharing positions during the trip, you can tell the rescue service where the phone last reported and when. That is a starting point, not a location: a fix can be old, or out by a long way in a valley.

Carry it with the people you travel with

Petra keeps the card, the documents and the group’s positions on the phone, so they are there when the signal is not.
